Others Present: Laurel Ann Dukart, Therese Linnertz

I.        Call to Order – Harold Narlock, Chair, called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM. Fr. Bill Callery led the group in opening prayer.

II.      Agenda – The agenda was approved as submitted.

III.    Standing Committees

A.      Pastor’s Report: Fr. Dan thanked all ministries for helping with the Easter celebration. We had enough volunteers to do everything. All three Masses were well attended. There is an important meeting scheduled on April 17 to discuss the Future Fund. Members of Future are those individuals who have contributed $500 or more to the fund.

B.      Religious Education/Youth Ministry: Don Palmiscno reported that five Junior High students are scheduled to attend the ND Junior High Youth Rally on April 6 in Langdon. He will be taking two 3rd Grade students, their parents and teacher to work at “Feed My Starving Children” on April 7. April 10 the 2nd Grade students will have First Reconciliation. The ticket sales for the Relay For Life quilt have been very good. About 40 books have been sold so far. The last regular class for 6th-12th Grade will be on May 1 and Preschool-5th Grade will be on May 5 with 10:30 AM Mass. The 3rd Grade class will have a Confirmation Retreat on May 8. Baccalaureate Mass is planned for 8:30AM on May 19. Confirmation will be at 12 noon on May 19 at St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center.

C.      Knights of Columbus: Harold announced that the last KC Breakfast will be on April 28. They are getting ready for the State Convention; Larry Roch and Tony Scheett are delegates for the meeting.

D.      Altar Society: Laurel Ann Dukart reported that the Altar Society served 340 adults and 14 children for the Palm Sunday Dinner. They have earmarked $10,000 for the St. Mary’s Building Fund. Since work is being done in the kitchen to replace the floor, the Altar Society decided to have the walls and ceiling painted, as well. Ye Olde Painters gave a quote of $325 for the walls and $540 for the ceiling. Painting will start on May 8. The Valley 4000 Birthday Party will be on April 30. They will serve Baccalaureate as planned. The final meeting before the summer will be on May 6 with Mass and Installation of Officers.

E.       Parish Family Life Committee: Ellen Rose announced that she and Don Palmiscno are working on getting a Young Families Group together, which will include Family Fun Nights.

F.       Liturgy Committee: Virgie Wilson thanked everyone for their efforts during Holy Week. The next Liturgy Committee meeting will be on April 23. She requested that ushers be present at the meeting. Crowning of Mary will be done at the 10:30 AM Mass on May 5. Another Parish Mission is being planned for Lent next year, March 30-April 1, 2014. They are looking for more people to be Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers, especially during the summer months. The Time and Talent sheets are being prepared for September. Also in September, Dr. Petroc Willey will be here for a presentation on the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This will be on September 12 with supper at 5:30 PM and presentation from 6:30-8:30 PM.

G.      Health Ministry: Don announced that the cost to rent mannequins from the Red Cross for CPR training is $10-15/mannequin/night. Harold is still checking about renting mannequins from Altru, though they don’t usually rent them. The other option would be to purchase our own. The cost for two adult and two child mannequins, as well as two AED simulators, would be about $700. We would then just need to upkeep the equipment.

H.      Holy Family/St. Mary’s School: Fr. Dan announced that Kindergarten Roundup had about 30 kids. Ellen requested that Michelle Emineth be asked to come to the May Parish Council meeting or write a report. We still need another Board Member from St. Mary’s.

IV.    Ad Hoc Committees

A.      Centennial Committee:  Fr. Dan stated that the next meeting will be on April 16. They have the outline of the Centennial Book determined; it will be about 60-70 pages. Alyce Stokke is putting it together. In addition, a new pictorial directory will be started Fall 2014.

II.      Agenda – The agenda was approved as submitted.

III.    Standing Committees

A.      Pastor’s Report: Fr. Dan announced that the Chrism Mass will be on Tuesday, March 26, in Fargo. He also stated that he is supervising the furnishing of the new Calvary Cemetery South Chapel and would like to make it a St. Mary’s 3rd Degree KC project.

B.      Religious Education/Youth Ministry: Don Palmiscno reported that the Preschool-5th grade students are saying a decade of the Rosary every day for Lent. Their parents are asked to send a coin for each decade said. The money will go to "Feed My Starving Children". The 3rd grade confirmation students and their parents are going to work at the bagging for "Feed My Starving Children" the weekend of April 5-7. The 6th-12th grade students will present "The Living Stations" at 7 PM on Wednesday, March 20. The Junior High Youth Rally will be held in Langdon on Saturday, April 6. Don will be taking students to it. The 8th-12th grade students have received information about NCYC (National Catholic Youth Convention) November 2013 in Indianapolis, IN. They will meet Monday, March 10, to discuss ways to raise money to help pay for the trip. Don would like to have about 10 students attend. Several 6th-12th grade students have been quilting. They are making a quilt that will be raffled off on May 31 at the Relay For Life. Tickets ($1 each, $5 for 6) will be sold starting next week. There will be no RE classes on Wednesday, March 27, or Sunday, March 31, due to Holy Week and Easter.

C.      Knights of Columbus: Harold announced that there will be a KC breakfast on March 17. The next KC breakfast will be on April 28.

D.      Altar Society: Laurel Ann Dukart stated that the Altar Society is getting ready for the Palm Sunday Dinner. Their March meeting was changed to March 11 due to the bad weather.

E.       Parish Family Life Committee: No report.

F.       Liturgy Committee: Virginia Wilson stated that the Liturgy Committee will be meeting on March 19 to finalize plans for Holy Week. New banners were made, new candles were ordered, new booklets with a short version of the Stations of the Cross will be distributed to parishioners in nursing homes. On Holy Thursday, the people participating in the Washing of the Feet will include six KCs, two High School boys, and four non-KC men.

G.     Health Ministry: Don asked if anyone knows of where to rent manequins and other equipment for CPR training. Virginia Esslinger would like to have another AED/CPR training session and the Red Cross no longer rents out the equipment.

H.      Holy Family/St. Mary’s School: No report.

IV.    Ad Hoc Committees

A.      Centennial Committee: Judd reported that there was a meeting this afternoon to discuss the Centennial booklets. All subcommittees will meet on Tuesday, April 16, at 5:30 PM. The Gilberts will be presenting information about the graphics for the Centennial Celebration that will be used on banners, t-shirts, etc. In addition, the Gilberts will announce timeline dates when things need to be ready for publication. The Centennial Committee needs as much participation and support as possible. Judd will keep the Pastoral Council updated as they go along.

V.      New Business

A.      Harold was asked by a parishioner about the spacing of the pews. The person asking felt that the pews are too close and was wondering if they could be repositioned to make more room. We would need to keep this in mind for the future as it would only be done if a major renovation were to occur, such as replacing the floor tiles. Further discussion indicated that others prefer the current spacing. There was concern that if such a change were to be made, we would lose necessary seating space. Both viewpoints will be kept in mind if such a change is considered in the future.

B.      Dale Rivard announced that the kitchen floor will be replaced with commercial tile squares and displayed a sample. The tiles can be replaced individually in the future, if necessary. The current linoleum floor is rippled as a result of the moisture in the floor from the flood. The  work will occur in April at an estimated cost of $8,000-10,000.

C.      Dale reported that the Church addition/new elevator project was released for bids this week. The Finance Committee is expecting final bids in 4-6 weeks.

VI.    Fr. Dan led the group in closing prayer.

VII.  Adjournment – The meeting was adjourned at 7:57 PM.

Respectfully Submitted,

They need help, so anyone interested in participating is welcome. Contact the Parish Office for more information. Deacon Sam announced that he has received a response from the Sisters of St. Joseph. They are getting together pictures of past principals and teachers.

V.      Unfinished Business – Fr. Dan gave a reminder about his Lenten Reflections which will be at 7 PM on Wednesdays.  They will be about the major achievements of the Second Vatican Council and the difference it made to the Church.

VI.    Deacon Sam led the group in closing prayer.

The replacement of speakers in the Church has been approved by the Finance Committee and will occur soon. About 80 people attended the Fall Festival on October 28, which was down from last year. Four High School students attended the “Life Worth Defending” talk on October 30. According to Don, it was an excellent talk on forgiveness. The Junior/Senior High students attended the All Saints Day Mass on October 31. They were Altar Servers, Lectors, picked up the collection, and brought up the Offertory gifts. Altar Server practice will be held on Sunday, November 4, after 10:30 AM Mass. The Elementary Christmas program is scheduled for Sunday, December 16.

She distributed a list of the seven subcommittees which include Schedule and Events, Media/Advertising, Interviews, Promotional Items, Centennial Booklet, Recordings CD/DVD, and New Directory.

II.      Agenda – The agenda was approved as presented.

III.    Standing Committees

A.      Pastor’s Report: Fr. Dan stated that he recently returned from the Presbyteral Days meeting held in Jamestown October 1-3. This annual seminar and business meeting for the priests of the Fargo Diocese was very good, according to Fr. Dan. Bishop Kagan, Apostolic Administrator, arrived on Wednesday. He has appointed Msgr. Goering as Vicar General. Fr. Dan discussed some changes that the Liturgy Committee would like to make during Mass to improve the Liturgy. Announcements about fundraisers, etc., will be made before Mass starts, instead of after Communion, as has been the recent practice. In addition, the Choir will be asked not to sing a song during Communion, perhaps having instrumental meditative music, instead. Fr. Dan also announced that Scripture Study will start Tuesday, October 9, and the Year of Faith begins Thursday, October 11.

B.      Religious Education/Youth Ministry: Don Palmiscno distributed information about this year’s RE enrollment. It is up from last year, and attendance has been good. They have started introducing a new curriculum, “Circle of Grace”, to the Middle School and High School (MS/HS), which teaches students how to respect themselves and others. The MS/HS students are invited to participate at the Public Square Rosary Crusade at noon on October 13 and they will help with the Fall Festival as proceeds from that event will go to the Youth Fund. Other upcoming events for the MS/HS students were announced, as well.

C.      Knights of Columbus: Don announced that a KC Breakfast will be held on October 14. The 4th Degree has been asked to participate in the flag ceremony for the Public Square Rosary Crusade on October 13, and will participate in the flag ceremony for the Youth Convention to be held at St. Michael’s on October 14, as well. Installation of Officers occurred at 8:30 AM Mass on September 30.

D.      Altar Society: Laurel Ann Dukart announced that over 500 people were served during the Fall Dinner, up about 100 from last year. There were several good comments about the meals. Many food items were donated, so ticket sales should be profit. Coffee and rolls started September 30. The Senior Christmas Party will be held on December 15. With proceeds from the Fall Dinner, the Altar Society suggests replacing the counters in the kitchen and dish room. They also recommend replacing the carpet on the south stairs, though there was a question as to whether that would be an Altar Society expense.

E.       Parish Family Life Committee: Ellen Rose stated that the committee will help with the Fall Festival, as needed.

F.       Liturgy Committee: Virginia Wilson stated that the committee met on September 18. They talked about the Time and Talent forms, which were distributed on September 30. To date, there has not been a good response, though they hope to receive more completed forms in the upcoming weekend. The new schedule is out for sacristans. Don and Andy Palmiscno will do Altar Server training in early November, date yet to be determined. There will be a workshop for Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers on November 7, time yet to be determined. A theological explanation of the Sacrament of Anointing will be put on the front of the Bulletin along with an announcement in the Bulletin stating that the group Anointing of the Sick will be decreased to every other month. Fr. Dan will do individual anointing, upon request. They are looking for someone to lead the Rosary before 5:30 PM Mass. Virginia said an announcement will be placed in the Bulletin that assisted hearing equipment is available for those who need it. The celebration of the Holy Year of Faith will begin on Thursday, October 11, with bells rung at noon for three minutes. There will also be a celebratory Mass at the Cathedral in Fargo. They will be getting new banners for the Church, starting with purple. The Parish Mission will start on December 8; they are waiting for more information before printing posters. The next Liturgy Committee meeting will be on October 23.

G.      Health Ministry: Virginia Esslinger discussed some of the Health Ministry activities she has done over the past few months. She will start providing Bulletin inserts again this month. A flu shot clinic was held in conjunction with the Fall Dinner on September 23. Eighty-two people were vaccinated, up from last year’s number of 72. The Advisory Committee meeting will be on October 10. Virginia will talk with the committee about having another Healing Service. Fr. Dan asked her to put something in the Bulletin about the Third Street Clinic. Harold reminded Fr. Dan about the discussion in September to combine the Social Concerns and Health Ministry Committees. Fr. Dan stated that he had not talked to Aida Wakefield about this. Virginia will add that item to the agenda for next week’s committee meeting.

H.      Holy Family/St. Mary’s School: Fr. Dan announced that we need volunteers for the School Board. He will ask around for someone who has children attending Holy Family/St. Mary’s School and is interested in joining the School Board. There will be a Holy Family/St. Mary’s School Mass at St. Mary’s on November 18 at 10:30 AM.

IV.    Ad Hoc Committees

A.      Centennial Committee:  Judd McKinnon stated that the committee was unable to meet in September. An October meeting date is yet to be determined. They have plans to have the Celebration Banquet catered. The new parish directory is already scheduled. Russ Prochko mentioned the proposed contest for the centennial banner. He spoke with Don Palmiscno about getting the RE students involved. Fr. Dan said that as soon as the new Bishop for the Fargo Diocese is in place, we need to contact his office to get the Centennial Celebration on his schedule.

V.      Unfinished Business

A.       Harold spoke about concerns about the speaker system in the Church. Ellen and Fr. Dan met with HB Sound & Light to discuss this; a bid is coming soon to replace the speakers and work with the acoustics of the Church.

B.      Century Electric was here to change the lights on the pillars in the Church. The new lights are more energy efficient and the old ones were a fire hazard. The next step is to improve the lighting in the Choir area.

C.      Virginia Wilson mentioned the St. Michael’s Christmas Eve Dinner. The next planning meeting will be in October. Virginia and Ellen Tetrault will attend the meeting. Volunteers are needed to work at the Dinner. They fed over 1000 last year.

VI.    New Business

A.      Ellen Rose presented a request from Terry Ahmstad of the NDAD. They have asked to use the gym on Sunday afternoons for wheelchair basketball practice. Other people have made similar requests and were denied. We need to follow the same guidelines with approving this request or not. Judd moved that we give permission to NDAD for use of the gym as requested with the conditions that they have group insurance coverage and St. Mary’s activities take priority. Cheryl Hoekstra seconded the motion. Motion carried.

VII.  Other

A.      Fr. Dan led the group in closing prayer with a special intention for Anna Dukart and her family.

VIII.            Adjournment –The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 PM.

A.      Social Concerns: Fr. Dan reported that Aida Wakefield has tried to get others involved in this committee, but has been unsuccessful. It currently is dormant. Most requests for assistance come through the Health Ministry. Due to this fact, a suggestion was made to combine the two committees. This will be presented to Aida and Virginia Esslinger. The former school library has been cleaned out and rearranged for use as a classroom. The remaining books are being sold for 25¢ each in the second floor hallway.

D.      Knights of Columbus: Harold stated that the KCs have not met yet this month. The 3rd and 4th Degree will participate in the Special Olympics on September 15. Installation of Officers will take place at 8:30 Mass on September 30. The next KC Breakfast will be on October 14.

E.       Altar Society: No report.

F.       Pastor’s Report: Fr. Dan announced that there will be a priests’ meeting next week Thursday when they will make a schedule for the Fall Reconciliation services. The Parish Mission is scheduled to begin on December 8. Fr. Louis Studer will lead the Mission. With the elections coming up, Fr. Dan will not talk politics, but he is planning to address moral issues on behalf of the Church. He requested prayers for priests so they all can know what to say.

G.     Liturgy Committee: Ellen Rose read an email sent by Virginia Wilson. The Liturgy Committee will meet on September 18. They will discuss the Time and Talent sheets, set a date for the Eucharistic Minister and Lector workshop, start planning for Advent, and other ways to enhance Liturgy. Ellen distributed the new Time and Talent sheets for review.

H.      Health Ministry: Ellen stated that Virginia Esslinger asked her to announce that Molly Soeby will do flu shots and Virginia will do blood pressure checks at the Fall Dinner. The cost for flu vaccine is $29 for injection, $39 for mist, and $66 for high dose. They will take insurance.

I.        Holy Family/St. Mary’s School: Fr. Dan reported that enrollment is up. There is an opening on the Holy Family/St. Mary’s School Board for a representative from St. Mary’s. We need to select someone to take this position from those who have children attending Holy Family/St. Mary’s. Michelle Emineth is currently on the School Board.

IV.    Ad Hoc Committees

A.      Centennial Committee:  Judd McKinnon reported that the Centennial Committee last met in May. They have plans for a meeting in September, though no date has been set as of yet. Alyce Stokke went through UND and Grand Forks Herald archives, as well as materials available at St. Mary’s, and put information together to create a history book and a book about the stained glass windows. Biographies of each of St. Mary’s pastors are now on the parish website.

V.      Unfinished Business – None

VI.    New Business – None

VII.  Other:

A.      Harold asked that Pastoral Council members consider suggestions for new Council members. Those members with terms expiring need to be asked if they will seek another term. Elections will be held in November.

B.      Fr. Dan asked that we pray for success of the Capital Campaign for the new addition. We should engage parishioners, talk with them, answer questions if able or refer them to the Parish Office, and do what we can to help the whole process.

VIII.            Adjournment – Harold adjourned the meeting after Fr. Dan let the group in closing prayer.

Respectfully Submitted,

Angela Scheett

Secretary
