St. Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru in 1579, the child of John de Porres, a Spanish knight, and a slave woman from Panama named Anna. Martin inherited his mother`s features and dark complextion. After being apprenticed to a barber/surgeon by his mother at the age of twelve, he later became a professed lay brother in the Order of the Friars Preachers at Lima.
Martin had many duties, including barber, surgeon, wordrobe-keeper, and informarian, all of which he fulfilled with great care, dedication, and promptness. He loved to care for the sick, especially those among the poor in the city, and he helped establish an orphanage and a foundling hospital, as well as other charitable institutions. He was said to have had several unusual powers: miraculously increasing the alms of food he distributed to the poor, aerial flights bilocation (being in two places simultaneously) and other supernatural gifts.
Martin was extremely fond of animals and even kept a "cats` and dogs` home" at his sister`s house. He was a close friend of St. Rose of Lima.
St. Martin de Porres died at the Rosary priory on November 3, 1639, and was carried to his grave by prelates and noblemen.
